In chess, a Pin is a tactic in which a defending piece cannot move out of an attacking piece’s line of attack without exposing a more valuable defending piece. Moving the attacking piece to affect the pin is called pinning; the defending piece restricted by the pin is described as pinned.

A skewer is one of the basic tactics of chess. It consists of taking advantage of aligned pieces to gain material or, in some cases, a strategic edge against the other player. To use the skewer, you attack the file or diagonal where your opponent’s pieces are lined up.

A deflection is a tactic that forces a piece away from a specific duty or square that is important. After the deflection is performed and the piece is forced away from the important square, another operation can be carried out that wasn’t possible before.
